I’ll admit that I’m not a big HBO fan. The only show I regularly check out is True Blood but that’s about it. Until one night my mom and I were looking for something to watch On Demand and stumbled upon a documentary series called Brave New Voices. The show followed teams from five U.S cities preparing to compete in the Brave New Voices spoken word competition. These teens came from different experiences and backgrounds and put all of their struggles and hardships in to absolutely beautiful poetry. The show follows the teams preparing their pieces, then coming to Washington DC to compete against each other for a chance to win the championship.
What I loved the most about this show was, as a writer, it inspired me. To see teens channel their emotions in to amazing pieces of writing made me want to be a better writer. I could never get on stage and perform a piece of poetry in front of an audience. Poetry is something that I admire so much but can’t do. I’ve tried, but nothing sounds good, it’s hard to make things rhyme and create something deep like others can.
The series only lasted for seven episodes, the finale was one hour and showed almost complete poems. At the end of the show, who won didn’t matter because everyone wasn’t in the competition to win, it was about sharing words and ideas.
To me these poets have become celebrities. I follow some of them on Twitter and are fans of them on Facebook. I’ve fallen in love with some of the guys. There is nothing hotter than a guy who can write and perform poetry. They are all such smart people and will probably go on to do great things in their lives. They already have because they’ve inspired writers all over the world, including myself.
If you have some time, check out some of these poets on youtube. I guarantee it will blow you away. I’ve included some videos from the show and links. Enjoy!
